From Arbuel to the hills of Condrieu – Rhône Pilat – Condrieu

Condrieu

Explore the Arbuel Trail, between wild ravines, mineral hillsides, and southern flora. A route punctuated by panoramic views of the Rhône Valley and experiences of nature, culture, and heritage to be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

Description

You'll love:
• The Arbuel trail, shaped by mule trains that transported coal from the Rive-de-Gier mines to the port of Condrieu.
• The lush Eden of the Arbuel, where the mildness of the south is already evident with the presence of southern flora.
• The contrast between the wild nature of the Arbuel ravine and the minerality of the wine-growing hillsides.
• The panoramic views of the Rhône Valley, sometimes with the curves of Mont Ventoux visible.

You'll enjoy it better:
• Epicureans: make an appointment with a winemaker to stock your cellar with prestigious vintages.
• Naturalists: after studying the Arbuel biotope, explore the Rhône backwaters at the Ile du Beurre Observation Center. • Festive spirits: stroll along the ViaRhôna and enjoy the events organized during the summer months: concerts, tastings, sports sessions, etc.
• Heritage lovers: take the time to read the interpretive panels along the Arbuel trail.

A bit of culture:
The Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie AOCs
These exceptional vintages are the northernmost wines in the Rhône Valley. The history of the vineyard and the unique steep terrain contribute to their nobility. The Gallo-Roman civilization consumed a lot of wine. The area's adequate sunshine and geology were perfectly suited to the vines. The result is nectars appreciated as far away as Rome. 2,000 years later, winegrowers still depend on the whims of the land, including manual maintenance, coupled with walling expertise to maintain the soil through terraces. Côte-Rôtie is made from the Syrah grape variety, sometimes supplemented with Viognier. This aromatic and tannic red wine has remarkable aging potential. Condrieu is a white wine made from Viognier. Its aromas are floral and fruity, and its color deepens over time. Paired with Rigotte de Condrieu, an AOP goat cheese, they form a beautiful flavor pairing.

This route is currently not accessible by train: for safety reasons, the Condrieu – Les Roches bridge is closed. The car-free alternative, which involves taking the train to St-Claire-les-Rôches station to reach Condrieu via the GR65, is currently no longer feasible.
